1. Fiber Core VS Steel Core

  • IWRC Steel Core: Offers roughly 10% higher minimum breaking load, outstanding anti-crushing property and heat resistance. It is the preferred choice for heavy-duty lifting and multi-layer winding on winch drums.

2. Popular Wire Rope Constructions On Construction Sites

  • 6×7+FC: Rigid structure, mainly used for static stay cables, temporary building bracing and fence tensioning. Not recommended for dynamic lifting tasks.
  • 6×19+FC / 6×19+IWRC: Outer wires are thicker with good abrasion resistance. It is the most versatile construction for tower crane accessories, guy cables and general rigging.
  • 6×37+FC / 6×37+IWRC: Consists of finer single wires, delivering superior flexibility. Suited for frequent bending applications such as lifting slings and hoist main ropes.
  • 7×19: Low rotation feature and soft texture, widely used for control cables, architectural tension cables and guardrail bracing.

3. Raw Material Grade & Application Boundary

Raw material directly determines tensile strength, fatigue resistance and end usage.
  • Medium carbon steel 65#/ 70#: Achieves tensile strength around 1570MPa. Suitable for light static tension, fencing and agricultural cables. Important reminder: such material cannot be adopted for EU standard CE lifting slings.
  • High carbon wire rod SWRH72A/ 77B /82B: Standard raw material for industrial lifting wire rope. Stable 1770MPa & 1960MPa tensile grades, excellent bending fatigue performance, compliant with EN12385 European rigging standards.
Stainless steel options: AISI 201 only fits static decoration due to limited tensile strength and weak salt spray resistance. For corrosive lifting environments, AISI 304 is the minimum option; AISI 316 is suggested for coastal and marine construction.

4. Anti-Corrosion Options: Electro-Galvanized VS Hot Dipped Galvanized

Corrosion protection is vital for wire rope working outdoors and on humid construction sites.
  • Electro-galvanized wire rope: Zinc coating thickness 5~15μm, smooth surface. Anti-corrosion performance is moderate. With passivation and sealing treatment, it has a chance to pass 72h NSS salt spray test. As scratches inevitably occur during stranding, stable salt spray results cannot be guaranteed. Suitable for indoor and low-humidity projects.
  • Hot Dipped Galvanized Wire Rope: Zinc layer reaches 45~90μm with metallurgical bonding between zinc and steel. It features reliable anti-corrosion capacity and normally passes 72h neutral salt spray test without red rust. First choice for open-air and coastal construction sites.
Bright ungalvanized wire rope is only applicable for short-term indoor lifting without outdoor rust protection.

  2. Required tensile grade and minimum breaking load
  3. Core selection: FC for flexibility, IWRC for heavy load & anti-crushing
