How to Distinguish PVC Coated vs Nylon (PA) Coated Steel Wire Rope & Proper Application Selection
Plastic coated steel wire rope is widely adopted for fencing, control cables, fitness equipment, architectural balustrades and industrial pulling systems. PVC and Nylon (Polyamide/PA) are the two most common extrusion coatings. Many buyers encounter quality risks: Suppliers replace expensive nylon coating with low-cost PVC without notification. This guide summarizes visual distinguishing skills, performance gaps and recommended usage scenarios to support your procurement decisions.

Ⅰ.Visual & Hand Feel Identification (On-site Inspection Without Tools)
1.Surface gloss
PVC coating: High gloss, strong reflection; multiple bright color options (green, blue, transparent).
Nylon PA coating: Matte finish, soft luster; mostly black, transparent nylon is less common, rarely made into vivid bright colors.
2.Hardness & indentation test
PVC: Relatively soft; obvious indentation remains after hard fingernail pressing.
Nylon PA: Compact and smooth; difficult to leave nail marks.
3.Bending test
Heavy bending on PVC jacket: Stress whitening appears at bending position.
Nylon PA jacket: No whitening after repeated bending, excellent rebound performance.
4.Low-temperature performance
PVC tends to harden and crack under continuous low temperature.
Nylon maintains toughness under wide temperature range.
Ⅱ. Burning Verification (Ultimate Simple Test)
1.PVC Coating
Flame base turns green; extinguishes immediately away from fire. Strong pungent acid odor. Burning residue is hard solid, cannot draw filaments.
2.Nylon PA Coating
Flame tip yellow, bottom blue; continues burning slowly after leaving fire. Smell similar to burning hair. Melted material can pull fine filaments.
Ⅲ.Performance & Application Comparison
1.PVC Coated Wire Rope
Advantages: Low cost, rich optional colors, excellent UV resistance, waterproof.
Limitations: Poor abrasion resistance; easy to wear when sliding on pulleys.
Best applications: Outdoor fence cable, guardrail cable, fixed lanyard, static binding (low friction, stationary use).
2.Nylon (PA) Coated Wire Rope
Advantages: Outstanding abrasion resistance, self-lubricating, impact resistant, wide working temperature range.
Limitations: Higher cost; ordinary nylon lacks anti-UV performance, long-term sunlight exposure accelerates aging.
Best applications: Push-pull control cables, fitness equipment wire rope, pulley circulation transmission, frequent reciprocating traction systems.
Ⅳ. Important Procurement Reminders
- Clearly specify coating material in inquiry & PI: PVC or Nylon PA, to avoid unauthorized material substitution.
- For projects with pulley friction and repeated movement, nylon coating is strongly recommended.
- Long-term outdoor exposed static cables, PVC coating brings better cost performance.
- We provide customized coated wire rope: galvanized / 304 /316 stainless steel core, customized coating thickness and colors.
